In the mid 1990s, as a devout Jehovah's Witness, I was shocked (to put it mildly) to discover that some Jehovah's Witnesses (most being Elders and Ministerial Servants, along with their families) were flocking to "Christmas concerts". What the JW families were attending were performances of Handel's "Messiah", which generally only occur during the Christmas holidays.

Since I obviously was from the "JW old school", in which I had been taught to fanatically avoid doing anything which would even remotely appear to be participating in the Xmas holidays (even avoiding the colors red and green during that time of year), I tactfully inquired as to the rationale behind this new JW custom.

A JW Elder informed me that attending live performances of Handel's "Messiah" was something done and even recommended by many Bethelites, including one or more members of the Governing Body of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Despite the fact that the performance promotes "false religious doctrine", the supposed "positive effects" gained from attendance supposedly outweighed the exposure to such false doctrine, which "mature" JWs could easily sort through anyway. It was even insinuated that Handel possibly may have been "inspired" to compose Messiah, and that he would likely be resurrected during the Millennium, and that he would then re-write it to eliminate the false doctrine and pagan influences.
